WASHINGTON The United States on Monday expelled most of Iraq'sembassy staff and tried to keep turning the screws on Baghdad despitea flurry of efforts to mediate the Persian Gulf crisis.
In a move likely to stiffen U.S. resolve, oil ministers from 10OPEC countries agreed early today to permit increased productionimmediately by some countries to make up for oil lost because of theinternational boycott of Iraqi and Kuwait crude.
The ministers were trying to come up with an "understanding"that would sanction production increases by Saudi Arabia, Venezuelaand others, sources said.
Ministers were expected to meet later today to endorse the plan.
