SA: Democrat leader urges Reith to push republican cause

ADELAIDE, Feb 3 AAP - The Australian Democrats today urged Employment Minister Peter Reith
to convince his cabinet colleagues of the merits of a directly elected president under an
Australian republic.

Democrats Leader Meg Lees said she welcomed reports Mr Reith continued to support the
concept of a directly elected head of state and would campaign against the idea of selection
by the parliament.

She said the Democrats had always suggested a number of options be put forward in any
referendum on a republic.
