UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council is congratulating the Haitian people on a peaceful end to a complicated election process.
Acting council president and French Ambassador Gerard Araud also credited the support provided by U.N. peacekeepers in a Tuesday statement.
The election was nearly canceled over problems and fraud in a first round held amid post-earthquake chaos and a cholera epidemic traced to a U.N. peacekeeping base.
Candidates then clashed for months over who should go to a runoff. Protesters paralyzed the capital, shot rivals and set a party headquarters ablaze.
The Organization of American States stepped in, recommending the ruling-party candidate be left out.
Popular musician Michel Martelly won and took power in a peaceful transition.
